Service gaps at Basic Health Units need attention, Dr. Abdul Rehman
President of the Association of Pakistani Physicians and Surgeons Europe Dr Abdur Rehman Shahid had a fruitful meeting with Dr Faisal Sultan, Federal Health Minister of Pakistan, at the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) Islamabad.
Following important points were discussed.
- Service gaps at Basic Health units were identified, and solutions were presented to Dr Faisal Sultan who really appreciated the detailed presentation.
- Unfortunately, due to lack of basic emergency medical facilities, 70% of serious trauma patients lose their lives on the way and some more die in the hospital. Dr Abdur Rehman Shahid has been working with the Pakistan Society of Emergency Medicine and the Government of Pakistan for many years to to improve emergency medical facilities in Pakistan and increase the number Emergency Medicine Centres.
In the last two years the number of emergency departments have grown from just two to 12, which is a great achievement.
- PIMS Pilot Project: Dr Faisal Sultan presented the new triage system at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences to Dr Abdur Rehman Shahid and requested APPS Europe to assist in this pilot project to improve it future and replicate all around the country.
Dr Abdur Rehman Shahid expressed his unconditional support in taking up this project and assured that the APPS Europe team would work side by side with the Federal Health Ministry of Pakistan, as one of our aims is to improve the health systems in Pakistan.
The Federal Minister and his team appreciated the sincere efforts of APPS Europe and thanked President for reaching out to help with the development of Emergency Medicine in Pakistan.
